Binance Founder Changpeng “CZ” Zhao has recently made headlines by calling the meme coin ecosystem on BNB Smart Chain “immature” amidst a surge in meme coin activity. In a post on X, CZ expressed concerns about the ability of the current infrastructure to handle the increasing demand brought on by the sudden popularity of meme coins.
The surge in meme coin activity on BNB Smart Chain was partly fueled by a frenzy of dog-themed meme coins following a post by CZ featuring his pet dog named Broccoli. The launch of BNB Smart Chain’s native Test (TST) coin, initially created for a tutorial video for Four.meme launchpad, also contributed to the hype. TST experienced a staggering 2,000% surge in value before stabilizing at around $0.11, after hitting an all-time high of $0.56.
The increased activity on BNB Chain has seen PancakeSwap, a decentralized exchange built on BNB Chain, surpass Uniswap in terms of daily and weekly trading volumes. Despite the excitement surrounding meme coins, CZ acknowledged in his post that the infrastructure supporting them is struggling to keep up with the growing demand. He described the ecosystem as “immature” and highlighted the common performance issues faced by emerging platforms.
Harrison Seletsky, the director of business development at SPACE ID, believes that the launch of TST could be the catalyst for a meme coin season on BNB Chain. He suggested that more meme coin trading could bring additional liquidity to the network, attract new users, and further engage the existing community. With Broccoli meme coins flooding BNB, Seletsky’s prediction following the TST surge seems to be coming true.
